Novos Rurais Program

Initiative was selected by the UN as one of the best practices for sustainable development

Released in 2012, the The New Rurals Program (Novos Rurais) is an entrepreneurial venture for the creation of new businesses directed to agricultural schools students and has the goal to encourage those who wish to remain in the field, supporting new businesses, promoting revenue generation and boosting diversification in the rural environment. This pioneer initiative is recognized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO-UN) as a good practice for Sustainable Development.

The New Rurals is based on a methodology that is both theoretical and practical, which is applied with the partnership of technical schools and field organizations, resulting in financial support to projects that introduce a new culture or business in the field.

The program is divided in two stages. At first, the youth receives lessons on themes such as entrepreneurship, innovation and market tendencies. At the end of the classes, the students make a business plan that is subject to a technical evaluation. The young men and women responsible for the best projects are entitled to financial support so as to make their ideas possible. The second stage is when these selected students implement their projects and put their new business to work.
