Sustainability Report 2010

British American Tobacco Russia is one of the leaders in the Russian tobacco industry, with a market share of 20 per cent. The company has around 3,500 employees and factories in Moscow, St Petersburg and Saratov. The business contributed RUB 19.5 million (£415,789) in corporate social investment in 2010.

British American Tobacco Russia has been one of the pioneers of sustainability and social reporting in Russia and has a long-standing programme of stakeholder dialogue.

From the start of this programme in 2001 to the end of 2010, the company has held 51 stakeholder dialogue events on different topics of concern to both local stakeholders and the business. Around 1,550 stakeholders have taken part in these dialogues including consumers, regulators, health organisation representatives, business partners and local residents.

In June 2010, the company published a report on the results of two dialogues held in 2009. These addressed environmental management at its factory in Saratov and public place smoking. The report can be found at Opens in new window.

Russia’s performance against some of our key measures can been seen in its balanced scorecard. The company has achieved the Group target of 100 per cent adherence to our International Marketing Standards. It has also outperformed the Group targets for energy and water use. Its score in the engagement category for our employee opinion survey has the highest difference from benchmark, so shares the top place with Brazil, among the nine markets featured, for this measure.

For youth smoking prevention, the company is running three programmes focused on retail access prevention and education, as well as engaging with the government to improve measures to help prevent underage access to tobacco.
